Overview
The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) is the largest membership organization of asylum seekers in the United States, with over 700,000 members from 175 countries. ASAP members gain access to critical resources and join a collective effort to protect the rights of asylum seekers.
The Role
ASAP’s systemic reform team is looking to hire a Senior Litigation Counsel. ASAP’s systemic reform team focuses on participatory impact litigation, press, and advocacy efforts for ASAP’s 700,000+ members. ASAP’s litigation advances our members’ collective priorities by representing the membership as a whole, pursuing class actions, and/or representing individual asylum seekers and other immigrants. We work closely with our members to ensure our litigation work reflects their needs, experiences, and priorities. ASAP’s docket includes challenges under the Administrative Procedure Act, constitutional claims, writs of mandamus, and class action litigation.
Responsibilities
Serve as lead counsel on complex federal litigation with multiple organizational and individual plaintiffs and co-counsel.
Serve as primary drafter for motions, complaints, discovery papers, and other legal filings.
Represent ASAP in federal court, including oral advocacy, as well as in negotiations with opposing counsel.
Serve as a primary contact for ASAP members and other plaintiff organizations engaged in litigation.
Develop relationships with partner organizations and potential co-counsel, and speak on coalition calls on behalf of ASAP.
Qualifications
A J.D. degree and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required.
Fluency in either Spanish or Haitian Creole is strongly preferred.
Minimum of 8-10 years of litigation experience, specifically in federal court.
Experience drafting substantive legal motions and oral advocacy in federal court is required.
Excellent judgment and prior experience leading case teams in complex litigation matters.
Experience working as class counsel is highly valued.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple matters and priorities simultaneously.
Excellent oral communication skills, including in legal advocacy and public communication.
Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal and policy issues clearly, accessibly, and in a well-organized manner.
Prior experience working on behalf of asylum seekers and immigrants.
Ability to be flexible and quickly learn and adapt to new processes, systems, and tools.
Open communication, collaboration, and a positive attitude even under stress.
Salary & Benefits
Salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, with a range of $140,000-$160,000. ASAP offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance coverage for the employee at no cost, 401K matching, generous paid vacation, personal, and sick days, and paid parental leave.
Location
ASAP is a 100% remote organization with no physical office locations. Staff may work remotely in any of the 50 U.S. states and D.C., excluding U.S. territories.
